We Moved! After 22 years in our mountain home in the Spring Cove area of Union County, Georgia, we moved to Hiawassee Park, a retirement community fourteen miles away - in Towns County. Acturally, it was the thirteenth time we've moved in our almost 60 years of marriage, but maybe the toughest. The 22 years in Spring Cove was the longest we had stayed anywhere. And, it was where we had accumulated the most stuff that had to be disposed of.
This move marked a change in life style, not only because of moving to a retirement village, but also because one of the things we had to dispose of was our Airstream motorhome. The motorhome and the Airstream trailers before it had allowed us to spend several weeks each year traveling around the country. Those traveling years provided some great friends and good memories, but they are now behind us.
Hiawassee Park is a Baptist sponsored retirement village consisting of thirty-four housing units, built as duplexes, each one with lots of modern amenities and designed for senior citizens. Our unit is brand new overlooking Lake Chatuge, and it gives us a view across the lake of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia. Many of our neighbors are members of the same church family - McConnell Memorial Baptist Church in Hiawassee.
The moving started the second week of November (2013) as soon as we received notice that a certificate of occupancy had been obtained. The first things to be moved were shop tools, set up in the oversized double garage. Men-on-the-Move helped move the heavy equipment then three weeks later moved the heavy furniture. Our first night in the new place was December 2nd. Over the next few weeks we made one or two trips a day to Spring Cove gathering stuff, and by Christmas were settled in.
We've already been included in two or three pot-luck dinners in the park's beautiful new clubhouse - the most recent a Christmas party with great live entertainment. Future plans for the village include a two-story lodge with apartments, a dining room, and an assisted living area.
So this is home for the foreseeable future.
